Richard had the security types laughing in no time and we all rode up together in the elevator to the studio. A member of the staff, who moments earlier had thrown me out without even listening to an explanation (apparently the show's publicist hadn't given her the word that I was coming), looked right past me and began fawning all over Richard, who hardly noticed. He was already into a stream-of- consciousness thing regaling the hair stylist and track star Carl Lewis, who was also a guest on the show and was wearing a silk suit that Richard kept saying was to die for.
